Hey everyone, I just finished playing for the UC Santa Cruz Women's volleyball team. I have also coached volleyball for four years. Does anyone need any advice or good coaching drills for a volleyball team or P.E. class?

How do you teach a 5th grader to serve a volleyball when she doesn't have the strength to hit it over the net? I once saw a coach teach a girl to strike it underhand. What do you think?

Serving overhand in volleyball is usually the most difficult skill to teach. It usually requires more mental focus versus physical skill. Some good coaching techniques that I recommend would be to start off with a tennis ball and to have the player practice the toss up. The toss up should land right in front of their foot. Second they should practice throwing the ball over the net to get a good understanding of how they should follow through with their swing. Next they could move on to practice with the volleyball.
