I'm new to teaching, so I'm wondering how often should a teacher give homework. Any suggestions? |

What grade do you teach? Do you teach all subjects?
For my 2nd graders they get one spelling assignment each week, math almost daily, and they must read 20 minutes each night and answer a question about their reading. Seems to be just about right for them. It really just depends on you. I know plenty of teachers who don't assign any homework other than math. Some assign much more that me. |

I teach after school classes for a range of grade levels. Basically 1-5. Thanks for the advice. I've been curious to know the amount of extra work I should give. I guess Math is a main focus. |

I give homework twice a week. One written assignment and one test or quiz. I also require students to read 20 minutes a night from their chapter book. |

I believe homework should be given everyday. It gives the students a sense of responsibility and it prepares their minds for school the next day. |

Homework everyday is good, however if you teach one subject you should be aware that there's probably five other teachers also assigning homework. To be realistic, i usually give homework two times a week. Plus, I add in a test or quiz. |

I believe that Homework should be used to re-enforce the student's understanding of the lesson that was taught on a particular day or group of days. So if teachers are covering 1 area of a topic over the course of 3 days, perhaps assign a homework project after that 3d day of the subject area to re-enforce it at home. |

I usually give homework daily, but I keep in mind a tip that I had heard from an administrator. Homework shouldn't be longer than the grade that the student is currently in. For instance, first grade = 10 minutes, second grade = 20 minutes etc. |

I agree with MLondon. Homework is something a teacher should give to re-enforce a lesson or lead into a new lesson. I believe it's the parents responsibility to stimulate their son or daughter's mind while under their watch. |

Homework depends on the types of students you have. If your students can handle larger work loads, giving homework more often is beneficial. If they don't return homework, than why waste the time giving it? |
