I'm a newer teacher and was wondering what discourages new teachers from staying in the profession? |

I've been teaching at the high school level for 12 years, now, and I'm not sure how I survived the first 5 of them. I recently spoke to a former student of mine who went into teaching and stayed for only two years. She said she was discouraged by several things. Parent involvement, or lack thereof, was her primary complaint. She was also overwhelmed by the bureaucracy, red tape, and lack of respect for teachers as professionals. All of these things together were simply too much for her and outweighed the satisfaction she received from the job. These aspects of the profession are frustrating, and it takes some time to learn to deal with them on your own terms. |

It is pretty crazy that the teaching bureaucracy prioritizes budgets and politicking over the well being of students. I know this would frustrate anyone. Its time to level the playing field so teachers have a sounding board to voice their concerns and collaborate. |
