Its been my experience that you can never be prepared enough when its your first time meeting a group of students to teach. There are a few essentials that I have discussed with substitute teachers which will make your management a little easier. 1. Regardless of your usual approach: you need to let the class know that you mean business. 2. You can get plenty of help from neighboring teachers provided you introduce yourself prior to a start of class and briefly explain your situation. 3. Do your best to procure a roll call sheet prior to starting the class.(If this means badgering an attendance office before class go a head and do it) In the process of calling roll, write down students names so you can identify them with where they sit. 4. Try to make your instructions as clear as you can, even though some students may understand right away, others need the thorough explanation. I'm sure their are other suggestions, feel free to start where I left off.

I totally agree with halfpast. You have to be prepared for any eventuality when you are subbing. I always had a bag of supplies and lessons for all subject areas. Substitute Teaching Links http://cybraryman.com/substitute.html
